Yin Keh Lou (迎客楼), Sunway Pyramid

I planned to treat mom a nice dinner on her first day in KL couple of weeks ago. We moped around before deciding on Ying Ker Lou (迎客楼), Sunway Pyramid.

The Ying Ker Lou chain of Hakka cuisine restaurant seem to be doing pretty well and their branches has been mushrooming in Klang Valley. Four outlets located in prominent shopping malls in Klang Valley: The Curve, Pavilion, Sunway Pyramid and The Gardens.

Actually this is my first time here. I found their dishes very close to home-cooked food.

Immediately as soon as we sat down, a complimentary steamed ground peanuts was served. From the picture, you can see they served good quality large sized steamed ground peanuts. When the bill came, we got to know that the so called complimentary peanuts were actually not a complimentary after all. It costs RM3. Aiya, I forgot this world where got free lunch one? Right? Hmm, you eat and you pay!

Peanuts (RM3)

When we looked at the menu, three of us were blurred as we are not familiar of Hakka cuisine / food. Except those most famous one such as Lei Char and Hakka Yam Abacus Beads. However, the menu was easy to read with beautiful photos depicting and Chinese – English explanations.

Japanese Green Tea (RM4). It can be refilled.

Lei Cha (擂茶) is one of the must-try dishes for Hakka cuisine. Here you will be given a choice of brown rice or white rice to go Lei Cha with variety of cooked vegetables, bean curd, peanuts, white sesame seeds and fried shrimps (very crispy, NICE!). I find that those ingredients given to add in our Lei Cha was very fresh! The most important element of Lei Cha is the soup which is pounded from a comportment of tea leaves and herbs. The soup will be poured into the vegetables and rice and it is best to eat it immediately. Taste wise, it was great! The mint taste wasn't very strong which is quite acceptable to most people especially me as I always hesitate to eat this dish because of its strong mint taste. It is a nutritious meal and after tried the Lei Char here I immediately felt in love with it. The serving portion was quite big but we managed to finish it as three of us were sharing.

Hakka Pounded Tea, aka Lei Cha (擂茶) (RM13.90)

I simply love it!

Hakka Yam Abacus (算盘子) (RM17). Made of steamed yam, mashed and mixed with flour. It was stir fried with mushrooms and Wood Fungus ( Moo Er) and Dried Shitake Mushrooms. I found the dish quite insipid me and it does not tasted as good as I expected.
Hakka Yam Abacus (算盘子) (RM17)
Hakka Sauteed Assorted Mushrooms (客家炒野菇) (RM18)

Claypot Tau fu with minced meat and egg was actually made us quite disappointed as it tasted very salty and it has kinda weird smell.

Tofu with Ground Pork (瓦煲肉碎豆腐) (RM18)

Potato Ginger Soup (姜糖番薯糖水) (RM6)

Rice Dumpling Sesame Soup (芝麻糊汤圆) (RM7)

White rice was RM2 a bowl. Everything here is NO MSG as stated on the menu. I think this is one of the reason people keep coming here despite on the high sky price!

We are so stuffed and fullfilled after the dinner. Hopefully i can come here soon again to try other dishes. It's not cheap and i think the prices are a 'lil steep! It's definitely not an everyday Chinese restaurant but i would come here once a while when i have the crave for Hakka food.
